Blizzard has confirmed that GDKP raids will not be allowed in World of Warcraft: Forever. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield gave the direct answer during Blizzard’s September 17 developer Q&A: “The short answer is no.” In a GDKP run, players bid gold for dropped raid items and the collected gold is divided among the group at the end.
According to Greenfield, the decision is closely tied to one of WoW Forever’s main goals: protecting social play. Blizzard believes that when GDKP becomes the normal way to raid, it can begin to replace traditional guild groups. Instead of building a regular team and progressing together, players may feel that access to desirable loot depends mainly on the size of their gold balance.
The developers also see GDKP as a barrier for newcomers and players who are not wealthy. Greenfield said the system can create pressure to buy gold simply to keep up with other raiders. That does not mean every GDKP participant purchases gold, but Blizzard’s position is that a gold-based loot market strengthens the demand that illegal sellers try to exploit.
There is a wider economy concern as well. Blizzard says GDKP can give bad actors a convenient way to move or launder very large amounts of gold through apparently normal raid activity. The studio therefore plans to monitor the WoW Forever economy actively rather than wait for the problem to become established. The GDKP ban itself is confirmed; the precise enforcement methods and penalties have not yet been fully detailed.
For players, the message is clear before WoW Forever launches: raid progression is meant to revolve around guilds, stable groups, and shared adventures—not gold auctions. More rules may be explained closer to release, but anyone planning to organize GDKP runs should expect them to be prohibited from day one.
