One of WoW’s oldest appearance rules is going away. Blizzard has confirmed that patch 12.2.5 will let players transmog gear across armor types without restriction, opening cloth, leather, mail and plate appearances beyond the classes that normally equip them.

The announcement concerns appearance only. A Mage will not gain the defensive value of plate armor, and a Warrior will not replace equipped plate with cloth statistics. Instead, the wardrobe will offer many more visual combinations while normal equipment rules continue to control character power.

The change should also make older raids and dungeons more valuable to collectors. A drop that once belonged to the wrong armor category may become a useful appearance, while existing collections will provide far more pieces for custom outfits. Players who maintain several characters may need fewer repeated farming runs for similar looks.

Blizzard’s wording is broad, but some boundaries still need clarification. The studio has not explained whether every class-set appearance will become available outside its original class or whether weapon restrictions will change. Until Blizzard publishes detailed rules, those possibilities should not be treated as confirmed.

The official Midnight roadmap places patch 12.2.5 in spring 2027 and labels it with “Transmog Updates.” That window is Blizzard’s current plan rather than a fixed release date, and the roadmap warns that features and timing may change during development.
