World of Warcraft has introduced Lairs, a new version of world boss encounters designed to reduce waiting and make group formation easier. Instead of fighting a boss in the open world, players enter a dedicated instance and choose the difficulty that fits their group.

Solo players can select World difficulty and enter immediately. The instance fills with other players while participants complete a short two-part scenario. The final boss scales for groups of five to 40 players, so the encounter can begin without the usual crowd around an outdoor spawn point.

Premade groups can choose Normal, Heroic, or Mythic difficulty. Even Mythic uses flexible scaling for 15 to 25 players, giving guilds and communities more freedom when building a raid. A summoning stone is placed outside each Lair to make gathering the group simpler.

The first active Lair is the Tidebound Grotto on the Coiled Isle, where players face the naga sorceress Nymrissa Wavecaller. Normal, Heroic, and Mythic versions opened during the week of August 18, with stronger loot and achievements available at higher difficulties.
